January 26, 2009 - Workshop - Cruise ships (Ross A. Klein)

9:00am - 12:00pm
Skidegate Venue TBA

Ross will share his insights and knowledge about the cruise industry generally and specifically about
companies operating small cruise ships, aka“pocket cruises” or ultra-luxury cruise lines operating smaller
ships (including Seabourn Cruises, Silverseas Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and The World of Residensea)
and several companies operating expedition cruises that make their way through the Inside Passage of British Columbia.
Cruise tourism can be a meaningful source of income, however Ross would like to assist, if he can, in ensuring that we
avoid the disappointments experienced by our neighbours in Campbell River. In addition to sharing general information
about the industry, Ross will discuss the environmental impacts of cruise ships (and how these might be addressed) and the
economic relationship between ports and cruise lines (which, too often, tips in favour of the cruise lines) and how the economic asymmetry can be reversed.

January 26, 2009 - Workshop - Seafood Marketing (Quentin Fong)

1:30pm - 4:30pm
Skidegate Venue TBA

On Haida Gwaii, we are in the early stages of seafood marketing and production. Quentin will give some insight into what seafood marketing encompasses: product diversity, target markets, costs and the strategy required to get to Haida Gwaii to the same level of marketing success as the Alaska Sea Grant Program, and the idea of a "catch fee" (where a certain % of money from commercial catches stays in local communities). He will bring ideas, strategies or suggestions for us to consider and learn from.
