CEDAR INVENTORY

A cedar inventory project, just completed, shows the very real concern for the existence of cultural quality cedar. There is not enough old growth cedar left to support cultural uses into the future if current logging practices are maintained.
This inventory was conducted on Graham Island in an area where Weyerhaeuser holds the logging rights. The initial findings of the cedar inventory appear to
confirm the monumental cedars used for cultural practises are extremely rare.
After completing inventory surveys at 56 different sites, three red cedar trees,
suitable for monumental art, have been found. One tree is "culture class 5",
having a diameter at breast height (DBH) greater than 160 cm and the other
two trees are considered "culture class 4", having a DBH between 121 and 160 cm.

The CHN Forest Guardians are continually looking for areas that have old growth
cedar for present day carvers and younger stands for the future generations and
stands for weavers. CHN is prepared to work with the MoF and Licensees to
establish cedar reserves to protect theses stands.
