POLICY

People who wish to carry out activities in the forests of Haida Gwaii will be expected to follow the Haida Forest Policy with the consent of the Haida Nation. The Haida Forest Policy provides direction for Haida and non-Haida alike in the protection and use of the forests of Haida Gwaii.

Hlk'yan Yahguudangang is based on Haida Values which see Haida Gwaii as our life source. Our people have lived on Haida Gwaii since time immemorial. We learned the rules of proper land use and of environmental, spiritual, and social behavior from this place, its forests, waters, wildlife and plants. For us, the land is part of who we are; the people and the land are one. The land, animals, fish, trees, water, air and people are all linked and are a part of each other.

The Haida Forest Policy describes how the Council of the Haida Nation and our people relate to, protect, and use the forests of Haida Gwaii. This policy describes important responsibilities that we have for the protection and cautious use of our forests. For many years we have shared the bounty of our land that we call home. We are willing to continue to share the wealth of our territory with non-Haida. However, sharing not only includes the benefits of our territory, but also includes sharing the responsibilities of caring for and protecting the land.

Forest use must be culturally appropriate. Our use of the forests is culture in action. Any use of the forests must be conducted in a respectful manner. Therefore, our activities in the forest will respect and protect all parts of the forest. As part of the forest web, we will use the forest to provide for our needs, and to ensure that the needs of all life in the forest are met.
