haida heritage and forest guardians
The Haida Heritage and Forest Guardians Program tracks forestry activities on
Haida Gwaii through mapping and the review of cutting plan referrals. It also
works to assist the CHN Forestry and Archaeology committees to develop
policy consistent with Haida culture such as conducting Cultural Values
Surveys, which survey for monumental and future potential monumental cedars,
culturally important plants, wildlife habitat, and heritage/archaeological values.
The Program's primary roles are to provide technical support for CHN mandate
by supporting the committees that are involved in the recommendation for such
areas as litigation and negotiations over land use, rights and title, forest policy
development (such as the House of Assembly mandated 1,000 Year Cedar
Plan), and to respond to developments that adversely affect the land
HAIDA MAPPING
Manages and analyses data collected from all field surveys, including data on
culturally modified trees, bear dens, Cultural Values Surveys and Archaeological
Impact Assessments. Gathers data about Haida Gwaii from logging companies,
government ministries, and other organizations.
Provides maps for all field surveys, reports that are written following the
surveys and maps requested by members of the public - requests are welcome!
HERITAGE GUARDIANS
Provide technical and administrative support to the CHN Archaeology/
Heritage Committee.
The Guardians conduct Archaeological Impact Assessments and other
surveys requiring archaeological expertise.
An Archaeological Overview Assessment of Haida Gwaii is managed and
updated on a regular basis with information about Haida culture such as
traditional trails, CMT's, and village sites.
Haida Mapping also responds to and tracks all administrative referrals for
proposed land-based development that may impact archaeological and/or
heritage sites on Haida Gwaii.
HAIDA PLANNING AND LIAISON
Is a liaison between the tenure holder of TFL 39, Block 6 and the CHN.
Provides reports and information on planning and liaison activities to the
Council of the Haida Nation and Secretariat of the Haida Nation.
Receives all referrals, reviews all plans and planned cut-blocks to facilitate
Western Forest Products, Ministry of Forests, and Haida information sharing.
At times, field reviews are conducted in order to find solutions to Haida concerns
regarding the planned cut-blocks.
