ISLANDS SPIRIT RISING
GWAII SGAANAWAAY SIIGAA IIJAA

To all Islands people,

INTERESTING FACT
Nonnii Ethel Jones has been in the Masset hospital. Although she was scheduled to be medivaced to Vancouver she told one visitor she was so mad that she got sick just as it was beginning — the putting up of the Lines — because it is so important to be there. Nonnii Ethel didn’t go to Vancouver she went to the Yakoun Line instead.

SANDSPIT DIVISION - Islands Spirit Rising
A meeting was held in Sandspit on Monday night to discuss their community participation and support for Islands Spirit Rising. The meeting was attended by at least 100 people. A paper was put to the people who attended the meeting and the vision and goal from the paper was overwhelming supported. We will publish the vision and goal in the next bulletin. Members of the community have also started a food drive for people who are affected by this action.

BARGE MOVE
A request by Alliford Bay Logging to move a grapple yarder from behind the Lines and to remove it from the Islands was received and approved. We have been assured that the grapple yarder would not be logging Weyerhaeuser blocks here or anywhere else. People are keeping track of the agreement.

HELICOPTER TRAFFIC
At the Ferguson Bay Dryland Sort a small crew of island people inspecting the logs were buzzed by a helicopter. The helicopter had a camera and flew very low, very close and aggressively approached the crew, leaving quickly once a crew member pulled out a camera.

UNITY DANCE
A Unity Dance is being organized for April 22 at the south-end. The event, being sponsored by Islands Spirit Rising, is a fundraiser for families in need in all communities. A small group will be struck to figure out a fair way to distribute the proceeds.

COOK HOUSE
The cookhouse at the Yakoun checkpoint is now operational! It is a grand building complete with windows, doors and a woodstove. It is very much appreciated because in the last couple of days Haida Gwaii has tested us, as only Haida Gwaii can, with snow and strong southeasters. Plans are in the works to build a bunkhouse/meeting hall. A small cookhouse is also erected at the south end checkpoint.

CALLING
There is a call for Haida speakers to be at both camps. Contact your north or south coordinator to help out.
