| ISLANDS BULLETIN NO. 11 April 8, 2005 ISLANDS SPIRIT RISING GWAII SGAANAWAAY SIIGAA IIJAA To all Islands people, INTERESTING FACT: Kiiwaay guu giixan means People on the Line in the Skidgate Haida dialect. SANDSPIT ACTION The following vision and goal are from a paper presented at the Islands Spirit Rising Sandspit Division meeting this past week. The 100+ community members who attended the meeting adopted the vision and goal. [Sandspit] Vision: The community of Sandspit has been the hardest hit of any on the Islands communities by past changes to forest management and now our neighbours are experiencing such drastic change. We realize this change must and will continue for us all. We want to be authors of our own fate and not simply the victims of this change. We know that our resources are currently being managed in the interests of forest companies and the Provincial government, not our own. We see a future where Sandspit thrives as part of the Islands Community, where resource management is done in a manner that respects the land and the people that rely on it to make a life here, where our children can grow up here and be able to work here and have the same opportunities or better than we had. [Sandspit] Goal: To secure the long term stability of our community through unity with our Islands neighbours. HONNA LINE A small building was delivered yesterday to the Honna Line to replace the original checkpoint shelter that was hastily put up at the beginning of this action. The new shelter, with woodstove, is also a guest book. On the side of the building is the statement; I do witness and people are signing the building. LUNCHES The Health Centre staff and administration at Skidegate are helping out Islands Spirit Rising by organizing lunches for the crew that is meeting the cars coming up to the line. The staff and administration are also grateful for donations to this lunch program that will run next week. Kia mau Kia toa Kia manawanui - Be steadfast, Be brave, Be of good heart!
