LETTER FROM FORT MCMURRAY, BC, CANADA

Sending cheque to mayor

I have been following the latest developments on Haida Gwaii and I am impressed that a stand is being taken. For too long, the small communities have exported big dollars to the urban centres and received very little in return. For far too long also, the smaller communities have allowed the provincial and federal governments to play one against the other, accenting every difference and keeping people divided when a common front is sorely needed. Keep working together and I am sure success will be yours!

On a different note, I left BC a few years ago because I had the feeling too many politicians were lining their own pockets and stripping mine. It appears things have turned right around and the citizens of Port Clements appear to be keeping a tight rein on the mayor's expenses. As I feel they have gone a bit too far in making him pay for the hall rental in this fight, I am sending him a cheque to cover that expense. I feel it's a privilege to cover that expense as I have felt the pain of watching a small town I loved fade away without a fight. How I wish I could have been part of a positive action instead of a passive loss... Good luck!
