Haida Gwaii Museum’s Gina DaahlGahl Naay The Trading House gift shop is seeking a reliable, respectful, and capable Assistant Manager to support daily operations in our beloved store while working closely with artists and customers. Sales are handled both in-house and through our ecommerce site: www.haidagwaiimuseumgiftshop.ca. The role requires someone who loves retail, can work independently and in a team setting, stay calm under pressure, and take pride in providing excellent customer service.
POSITION: Assistant Manager
STATUS: Full-time up to 35 hours/week
TEAM & HOURS OF OPERATION: The successful candidate will report to the Trading House Manager; they will work both independently and alongside a retail assistant, summer studentsand the greater Museum team; at times they will also engage with and support the Haida Heritage Centre reception team. The successful applicant will be willing to work some Saturdays,and at times, outside of regular hours of operation, including the occasional evening and long weekend. The store’s public hours of operation are:
Winter hours: Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Summer hours: Monday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
WAGE: $25–$28 per hour, depending on experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Greet and assist customers in a respectful and professional manner
Remain calm and courteous during busy periods (including tour groups of 20–60 people)
Process, input, price, and merchandise freight
Restock merchandise and monitor stock quantities
Handle cash, complete cash-out procedures, and prepare deposits
Use of Microsoft 365 applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.
Perform data entry and reporting
Manage Museum memberships
Learn and use Shopify, including e-commerce, reports and analytics
Run sales and inventory reports as required
Clean and maintain the store: sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, keeping glass sparkling
Clean and polish jewelry
Work independently and unsupervised when required
Develop and maintain respectful working relationships with artists
Maintain artist bios, develop sales info and support marketing and promotion
Occasionally work after hours and on long weekends to support public programs such as exhibition openings and the Museum’s annual Art Auction & Gala Fundraiser
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Passion for people and retail
Passion for Haida language, art and culture; and local artists, arts and culture in general
Punctuality is essential as are excellent communication skills
Willingness to learn and take initiative
Team player with the ability to work independently and under pressur
Strong attention to detail and organization
Comfortable with cash handling and basic data entry
Basic knowledge of Haida language, art and culture and art/culture of our neighbouring nations
Some familiarity with local artists, local and regional community events, and visitor
experiences on Haida Gwaii
A willingness to learn and work beyond the general concepts of retail management
Respectful, clear, professional communication with customers, artists, and colleagues
Sense of humour and ability to ‘roll with it’
Ability to lift/move heavy objects
Valid driver’s license not necessary, but preferred
