A Haida animator who worked on Black Panther is celebrating the movie’s seven Oscar nominations. Gin K’alang Gayaa Josh Samuels was the lead roto animator for Marvel’s 1.3-billion-dollar box office smash. The work has not slowed down for Gin K’alang Gayaa.

“It’s so amazing the movie is receiving so much praise! I’m so proud to have worked on such an amazing movie with such a powerful message of artistry, culture, and people. I loved working on the Black Panther movie and learned a lot of new things,” says Gin K’alang Gayaa of his experience.

“Since the movie, Josh continues to make his family proud as he also contributed his animation skills in The Ant-Man and The Wasp and The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix,” writes his mother Taaw Guuda Ista Jaad Veronica Setso. “Josh is very humble and modest when it comes to his accomplishments. He continues to focus and work hard. His dedication, skills and talent have led him to reach his dream of working for Marvel Studios.”

Black Panther took the top award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, receiving the SAG for best ensemble in a motion picture on Sunday. Black Panther is also nominated for Best Picture, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and Best Original Song “All the Stars”.

The 91st annual Academy Awards will play live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 24th on ABC.
