Archaeological Technician

$31.91-$33.18 per hour based on experience, Full-time 35-40 hrs. per week

DESCRIPTION

The Archaeological Technician reports to the CHN Archaeologist.

The archaeological technician is responsible for assisting archaeologists in conducting research and excavations at various sites. They typically work under the supervision of an archaeologist and are responsible for performing tasks such as surveying, mapping, and documenting findings. They may also assist in the analysis and preservation of artifacts and data collected during excavations. The role requires a strong understanding of archaeological methods and techniques, as well as attention to detail and physical stamina for fieldwork. Strong communication and teamwork skills are also important for effectively collaborating with other team members and presenting findings.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fieldwork in remote locations and in inclement weather.
  • Fieldwork including survey, shovel testing, monitoring, and data recovery excavation;
  • Identify archaeological features and assist in the recording of field data.
  • Record field data using iPads and notebooks, take photographs, write effective field notes
  • Assist in field preparations, including equipment maintenance and logistical support;
  • Contribute to a healthy team dynamic and overall team safety.
  • Comply with all appropriate safety standards and CHN Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist with artifact processing and analysis
  • Preparation of technical reports, and site inventory forms.
  • Coordinating with archaeologist, field staff, and GIS staff, and interdisciplinary team staff;
  • Routine office tasks;
  • Other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills and Abilities:

  • Physically fit and capable of working long days in challenging environmental conditions
  • Strong communication and writing skills, including general knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Dedicated to a strong workplace health, safety, and environment culture with a willingness to participate in the team safety process.
  • Self-guided and motivated, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team as required.

Education/experience:

  • BSc or BA in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous work experience and or/training in Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geology, Forestry, Indigenous Studies is an asset.
  • Previous fieldwork experience cultural resource management and/or natural resource management.
  • Capable of conducting safe teamwork outdoors, in adverse weather, and in remote locations.

Certifications:

  • A Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract is required.
  • Preferred certifications include: OFA Level 1 & Transportation Endorsement/ Remote Level 1 First Aid, WHMIS, Bear Aware, but will train successful applications without these qualifications.
  • RISC Archaeology & CMT Inventory Training certificate is an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • Fieldwork often involves walking in challenging environmental conditions, and is carried out in most weather conditions.
  • Camp shifts, with non-standard hours and days of work, will be required throughout the season. Workers may share accommodations during camp shifts.
  • Some weekend and holiday work may be required during the season.
