Seasonal Boat Captain – Haida Gwaii Watchmen


Under the direction of the Haida Gwaii Watchmen Manager, the Boat Captain is responsible for the effective and cost-efficient field and boat operations, in keeping with vessel polices and Transport Canada Regulations and making sure the boat, motors and other equipment is serviced and maintained.


  • Navigate and operate the boat and ensure all crew and passengers adhere to all safety standards and regulations
  • Preparing the vessel prior to each trip insuring that the boat is in proper working condition, doing pre trip inspection and doing post trip inspections, cleaning and maintenance of the vessel
  • Oversee and direct crew to manage the safe operation including deck cargo on and off loading and passengers.
  • Navigate the vessel safely to and from each destination and ensuring that a trip plan has been made and given to the HGW Manager.
  • Record and report immediately to the HGW Manager all vessel accidents and incidents, regardless of the seriousness, including ill or injured crew or passengers.
  • Ensure all Safety equipment, including first aid supplies, is kept fully stocked at all times and is in good working order and that the crew is familiar with First Aid procedures and equipment usage.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate, complete date vessel logs daily
  • Conduct fire and emergency drills to the extent that all crew are sufficiently trained to act promptly in the event of an emergency, and record the drills
  • Other related duties as assigned


  • Five years’ relevant work experience and knowledge of boat operation and maintenance. Wilderness First Aid, Marine First Aid, ROC-M, MED A3, and SVOP tickets
  • A sound knowledge of the Haida Gwaii waters and area, as well as being familiar with Reading and understanding tide tables for Haida Gwaii waters and familiar with the weather conditions of Haida Gwaii
  • Must be able to work in a physical environment and conditions, and be able to load and unload gear and equipment repeatedly and safely
  • Be willing to work flexible schedule as directed by the HGW Manager
  • Being familiar with the policies, goals and objectives of the Haida Gwaii Matchmen programs is an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with experience working collectively as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of Haida/Indigenous communities and experience working with First Nations and asset.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License
