Seasonal: Marine Planning Field Assistant

The Marine Planning Field Assistant is a seasonal position that will participate in a wide variety of fieldwork, data collection, and sampling methods around the marine environment throughout Haida Gwaii, and contribute to numerous marine projects and priorities for the Haida Nation.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Support the European Green Crab Project fieldwork, including assisting eelgrass, bivalve, and shore crab surveys, moving crab and bait, cleaning and repairing gear, supporting contractors, and lab work with various samples.
  • Support kelp monitoring, including notetaking, counting and measuring kelp.
  • Support invasive tunicate monitoring, including cleaning and assembly of gear, field deployment and retrieval, and microscope lab work.
  • Support estuary monitoring, including collecting data on an iPad, carrying field gear, and walking estuaries.
  • Support marine environmental emergency response, assisting with boat travel, field surveys, response tactics, and training.
  • Data entry, field report writing, and other computer tasks.
  • Other field-based and office/lab-based tasks on various projects as needed.


  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license
  • Small Vessel Operators Proficiency in Knowledge of Haida/Indigenous communities and experience working with First Nations an asset
  • Knowledge of Haida Gwaii waters and experience working on boats an asset
  • Wilderness First Aid Certification is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and experience working collaboratively.
  • Willingness to work longer days and weekends as needed.
