SWIILAWIID EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Employment Opportunity

Position type: 3-year contract, with extension based on successful fundraising
Location: Haida Gwaii
Annual salary: $75,000-90,000


OVERVIEW
The Swiilawiid Executive Director (ED) is responsible for overseeing the vision and
strategy guided by the Board of Directors. The ED develops effective strategies,
programs and partnerships that advance the goals of the organization. The ED reports to
the Board of Directors and oversees a team of contract employees.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Swiilawiid’s ED supports a dynamic staff team and works closely with the board of
directors. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Alongside the board of directors, sets strategic priorities for the organization
  • Develops and oversees an annual work plan based on strategic priorities
  • Provides leadership, administrative, policy and governance support to the board
    of directors
  • Hires and oversees contractors
  • Develops sound policy and practice for smooth and culturally grounded operations
  • Builds and maintains effective partnerships to advance Swiilawiid’s goals and
    vision
  • Oversees all external communications and leads all internal communications
  • Fosters a cohesive team environment within remote working conditions
  • Develops and oversees community-based projects
  • Represents the organization at community events
  • Approaches fundraising from a place of abundance
  • Oversees all budgeting and grant management

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful applicant will have experience in, and knowledge of, Haida values and
culture. They will have a passion and plenty of experience working within Haida Gwaii’s
communities. The applicant will also have:

  • A commitment to Swiilawiid’s goals and success
  • Project management experience
     Experience leading a staff team
  • Experience developing community-based programs, events and activities
  • Knowledge of WordPress, Squarespace, Google Suite, Canva
  • Strong problem-solving and solutions-based approach to complex work
  • A passion for effective workflo
  • Superb communications and computer skills
  • A valid BC driver’s licence

WORKING CONDITIONS
The Swiilawiid team works remotely and the successful applicant will need to have a
home office. Community events, programs, and meetings require some evening a
weekend work. With a commitment to sustainability and well-being, Swiilawiid strives to
operate within a 4-day-work-week.
