National Inquiry to wrap up in June

On April 10 the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls announced it will present its Final Report to the federal, provincial and territorial governments on June 3, 2019. The Inquiry will release its report at a livestreamed public ceremony in Gatineau, Quebec.

The Inquiry, which began in 2016, was to examine the systemic causes of violence against missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

The Final Report comprises testimonies of 1484 family members and survivors of violence and 83 knowledge-keepers, experts and officials. Another 819 people shared testimonies through artistic expressions.

The Inquiry held 24 hearings and statement-gathering events across Canada throughout the past two years. The final report was originally due April 30, but the federal government says it has delayed the Final Report’s release to allow for translation of testimonies given in indigenous languages.
