CITIZEN UPDATE: DÁNEE VIRAGO SOUND

On Saturday, March 7 at 9:30 AM the local seine boat, Pacific Pearl, sprung a plank in its hull and began taking on water in Dánee Virago Sound. The Canadian Coast Guard and the Masset Marine Rescue / Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue responded and rescued all five crew members onboard. Responders attempted to dewater the vessel and tow it to safety. These efforts were not successful and the Pacific Pearl is currently capsized 300m offshore and in 10-meter depth of water within the Dánee area.

Due to adverse weather conditions, access to the casualty has been very difficult but all efforts are being made to monitor the situation. The vessel is currently stationary and further situational awareness updates are expected.

A virtual Unified Command has been established to oversee the incident with representation from the Haida Nation, Canadian Coast Guard, BC Ministry of Environment, Transport Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Resources are currently being deployed to monitor the situation and the Operations team is working on a recovery plan to have the vessel safely removed and minimize potential cultural and environmental impacts.

Updates will be posted on Council of the Haida Nation’s:
