A container ship suffered an engine fire en route to Tokyo and has been adrift 270 nautical miles south-east of Haida Gwaii since Tuesday. After receiving a distress call from the ‘MOL Prestige’, the Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (VJRCC) and the Canadian Coast Guard coordinated the medevac of two crewmembers who suffered injuries from the fire; 21 crew remain onboard. The ‘CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier’ arrived on-scene around midnight last night to provide relief and a tug is scheduled to arrive Saturday afternoon. The ‘MOL Prestige’ will likely be towed to xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Musqueam, Skwxwú7mesh Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territory in Vancouver for repairs. The medevac’d crew are being treated at the X̲aayda Gwaay Ngaaysdll Naay (Haida Gwaii Hospital in Daajing Giids).
