Writing the Land - Youth Poetry Workshop (Ages 14-24

Tuesday, June 9 from 3:30pm - 5:00pm - Masset Library
Wednesday, June 10 from 3:00pm - 5:30pm - Performance House at the Haida Heritage Centre

Writing the Land is an interactive poetry workshop exploring the relationship between self, identity, land, and the complex emotional and cultural connections that exist between them. Through poetry readings, guided visualization, discussion, and creative writing exercises, participants will reflect on how memory, environment, ancestry, community, and personal experience shape the ways we understand place and belonging. Drawing on themes of sustainability, environmental awareness, and storytelling, the workshop invites youth to consider land not only as physical space, but as something tied to emotion, history, identity, and responsibility. Participants will explore how poetry can hold grief, beauty, displacement, resilience, care, and hope all at once, while developing their own creative voices in a supportive and collaborative environment.
