POSITION SUMMARY The Mental Health Clinician and Team Lead will play an essential role in supporting the emotional, mental, and spiritual wellness of the Haida community. This position provides direct mental health assessment, counselling, referral, and education services while ensuring that care is culturally responsive and grounded in Haida values. In addition to providing client services, the Mental Health Clinician and Team Lead will guide and supervise the Strong Minds team.

SELECT DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Assessment

• To use counselling and interviewing techniques to obtain case history and background information to identify symptoms, causes, disclosures of incidents and assess appropriate treatment and referral;

• To establish goal and action plans which will progress the client towards wellness;

• To record and prepare assessment reports accordingly;

• To provide referral services to community and regional resources.

Counselling

• Provide crisis intervention counselling and referrals as necessary;

• To counsel and provide assistance to clients to meet their individual needs and facilitate their process towards wellness;

• To provide follow-up services to ensure clients are progressing satisfactorily and are receiving the necessary supports needs;

• To organize and facilitate therapeutic support groups;

• To liaison and consult with other social service providers and family members when appropriate;

• To recognize and engage in relapse prevention.

Supervision and Coordination

• To develop effective programming and strategies to tackle mental health issues facing the Haida community;

• To supervise and guide the Strong Minds team;

• To coordinate with other social service workers internally and externally to implement appropriate workshops, education programs and grief and healing programs, as deemed necessary;

• To educate the public about counterproductive attitudes and the stigma associated with mental illness;

• To advocate for those with mental illness to ensure physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs are provided for;

• To engage in community development projects to facilitate healing and growth and to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of mental health programs.

• Other duties as required to help support our vision, fulfill our mission and abide by our values

YOU WILL BRING

• Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or related degree

• 5 years experience in providing mental health/addictions counselling services January 2026

• 2 years experience supervising a mental health team

• Professional counselling certification

• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within the community as needed.

• Knowledge of Haida culture, history and the implications of colonization for Indigenous children, youth, families and communities.

• Demonstrated ability to act in alignment with Haida values, including Yahguudang (Respect), Ad Kyaanang Tlaagang (To ask first), Tllyahda (Make it right), and Gina ‘waadluxan gud ad kwagid (Everything depends on everything else) with the ability to build trust and maintain positive relationships within the community.

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with professionals, clients and caregivers.

• Ability to provide formal and informal education. • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

• Computer literacy for Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) and other relevant software.

• Must successfully pass a criminal record check. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Travel within the community may be required.

• Monday to Friday schedule but flexibility is needed from time to time based on the Health Centre’s needs and necessary call outs

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Records Check.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a BC Driver’s License and possess their own vehicle.

• Regularly required to stand, walk and sit and occasional lifting of materials and supplies. Pursuant to Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to qualified applicants of Aboriginal ancestry.
