HAIDA NATION UNCONDITIONALLY SUPPORTS MI’KMAW NATION

The Council of the Haida Nation offers support to the Sipekne’katik First Nation of theMi’kmaw Nation standing strong, as Mi’kmaq. We recognize and respect your sovereignty and self-governance. As an Island nation, we know the importance of healthy waters, communities, and economies and offer our solidarity – from coast to coast – to youexercising your inherent and treaty rights.

The world is watching and sees the ongoing systematic racism from Wet’suwet’en country to Mi’kmaw territory. As a nation, we condemn all acts of violence against Indigenous peoples and ways of life. Police brutality, racism in the healthcare system, anddispossession from lands and resources call for renewed relationships and equitable systems. There is no reconciliation without respect for inherent Aboriginal rights and treatyrights.

“On behalf of the Haida Nation, I express unwavering support to the Mi’kmaw Nation. It is our right to fish in our territories as Indigenous peoples and it is our responsibility to stand together against injustices. We know your struggle and we know your strength. The Haida Nation unconditionally supports you in upholding your rights.” — Gaagwiis Jason Alsop,President of the Haida Nation.
