Kelp Monitoring in Ḵaahl Guusda Guuhlɢ̲a Kun Telus Point
The Council of the Haida Nation Marine Planning Program would like to inform Haida citizens and Island residents of ongoing ecological monitoring being conducted by North Pacific Kelp Wild Foods (NPK) in the kelp bed off Ḵaahl Guusda Guuhlɢ̲a Kun Telus Point.
NPK is NOT harvesting kelp for commercial or personal purposes at this location and has informed CHN of their monitoring plan and protocol.
NPK’s objective is to understand the health and growth of Ngáal | Ngaal Giant kelp in different environmental conditions. An orange buoy has been stationed in the kelp bed. It houses temperature and light data loggers, which are being checked regularly by the NPK team.
Ḵaahl Guusda Guuhlɢ̲a Kun is one of four kelp beds in X͟aana Kaahlii Skidegate Inlet where NPK is conducting ecological monitoring. The others are K’aalts’ins Gwaayts’idaay Balch Islands, Tluu T’aang.nga Newcombe Bay, and southeast of Xaayna Gwaay.yaay Maude Island.
NPK commercially harvests Ngáal | Ngaal in other areas. Through the implementation of the Haida Gwaii Marine Plan, CHN and the Province of BC have developed and implemented conditions of licence for commercial kelp harvesting to ensure it is done with Yahguudang - Yahgudáng Respect. The CHN Marine Planning Program monitors kelp beds across Haida Gwaii to inform commercial harvest management.
