October 30, 2026 – November 30, 2026
Effective immediately until the end of November, the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) will be working with local European Green Crab trapping crews to implement a response program in Dal K̲áahlii (briefly known as ‘Delkatla’) and nearby areas in G̲aw K̲áahlii Masset Inlet. This will include intertidal and shallow subtidal areas around Masset Harbour. Traps are set by longline, and buoys are tagged “European Green Crab Research”. We do not foresee any impacts to vessel or float plane traffic, but please be cautious of increased in fishing gear deployed in the area. Questions and concerns can be sent to CHN Marine Planning at mpp.general@haidanation.com.
Please take extra care to ensure your vessel and fishing gear are thoroughly cleaned and inspected before moving it from areas with known invasive species to other areas on Haida Gwaii. In G̲aw K̲áahlii Masset Inlet, EGC have now been detected in Dal K̲áahlii, Juus K̲áahlii (briefly known as ‘Juskatla’), Gwaay T’úwaans Striae Islands, and around Kyaawan G̲andlee Hancock River.
