Public Notice: VHF Marine Weather Forcast

March 27, 2026

The Council of the Haida Nation wishes to inform community members of a recent change in marine weather forecasts broadcasted on VHF and substitute channels to continue to receive marine forecasts.

As of March 16, 2026, Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Weatherradio Canada service providing continuous weather forecasts over VHF radio channels has been discontinued. This service provided weather forecasts in areas with limited or no cell or internet service since the 1970s.

CHN has been in communication with Environment Canada, who confirmed that these services have been discontinued due to challenges with maintaining the technology and services due to increasing costs. Environment Canada states that part of their modernization efforts include “focusing on strengthening and expanding more sustainable and viable services.”

Community members can continue to receive continuous marine weather forecasts on VHF radio via the Canadian Coast Guard weather channels. The frequencies are channels 21B (161.650 MHz) and 83B (161.775 MHz).
