HAIDA GWAII WATCHMEN
About Us
The Haida Gwaii Watchmen program originally was started by passionate volunteers who wanted to preserve the village sites in the area known as Gwaii Haanas. It was very common for looters to come to these sites and take artifacts that were very important to the living culture of the Haida Nation, the work done by these volunteers was incredibly important in preserving the village sites that are now protected. The Watchmen program we know today was started in 1982, Watchmen are posted at the 5 village sites from spring to fall, protecting these areas and acting as ambassadors between Nations by educating visitors about Haida heritage and the history of the site they’re visiting.
