About Us
The Marine Stewardship Department is responsible for the stewardship and protection of the marine environments surrounding Haida Gwaii. As part of the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN), the departments plans, implements and evaluates programs that uphold Haida sovereignty over the waters of the Haida Gwaii. It includes the Marine Planning, Marine Mapping and Fisheries Departments, which work collaboratively to safeguard marine resources, promote sustainable practices, and ensure that Haida values are central to marine governance and decision making.

The Marine Stewardship Department organizes and participates in events that raise awareness and strengthen marine protection, including:
Community discussions on marine use and governance
Public updates on marine mapping and stewardship initiatives
Collaborative marine planning events with council and partners
Quarterly updates and presentations on marine initiatives
Partnerships
The Marine Stewardship Department collaborates with a variety of different organizations, most commonly working with Gwaii Haanas and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
