LAND STEWARDSHIP

The Lands Stewardship Department is dedicated to the care and protection of the lands of Haida Gwaii. As part of the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN), the department is responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating a wide range of programs and services related to land stewardship. It encompasses the Heritage and Natural Resource and Protected Areas Departments, all working together to support the Haida Nation’s sovereignty over its lands. Through strategic initiatives, the department aims to protect and enhance the natural and cultural environments of Haida Gwaii.

Projects

  • Stads K'un Stand Watching and Various Collaborative bird surveys

    Stads K'un ARU deployment and retrieval, Various bird survey collaborations with Canadian Wildlife Society, ECCC, Gwaii Haanas, BC Parks. Birds surveyed include, Peregrine falcon surveys on the west coast of Haida Gwaii, Marbled Murrelet ocean foraging surveys, Ancient Murrelet nest surveys, beached bird surveys, gull surveys

  • Invasive Plant Monitoring  

    The Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) has been actively managing invasive plant species on Haida Gwaii, focusing primarily on Scotch Broom, Tansy Ragwort, and Knot weed, the 2024 season saw extensive surveying and treatment efforts, with plans to expand once these key species are better contained. 

  • Bear Den Monitoring

  • Cultural Features Identification Monitoring on CHN Properties 

  • Archeology projects-various

  • Multi-species inventory work at the DND lands across from the elephant cage

Events

The Lands Stewardship Department hosts and participates in community and environmental events that highlight Haida values and priorities in land-based conservation. These may include: 

  • Public consultations and knowledge-sharing events 

  • Quarterly updates and presentations on land-based initiatives 

Partnerships

The Lands Stewardship program has a variety of partnerships including, Canadian Wildlife Society, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Gwaii Haanas, BC Parks.
